Fitness Training Tips: Incorporating Exercise in Everyday Activities

If you sometimes have trouble getting in your workout, there are some fitness training tips that you can use during daily activities to make sure that you stay active. Using the stairs instead of an elevator is one example of how you can burn a few extra calories during an everyday activity. Take a few minutes and review your daily routine so you can try to find some ways to get in a quick workout.

Workout at Your Desk

If you sit behind a desk at your job, there are a few simple exercises you can perform. The best time to exercise at your desk is any time you start to tire or lose focus. An hour or two after eating lunch is usually when many people start to run out of energy.

The first exercise you can do is for the abdominal muscles. Sit up straight in your chair, then squeeze and hold your abdominal muscles for a count of five. Relax for a count of two, then repeat the movement. You can do this abdominal exercise as often as you like during the day.

Another desk exercise to try are calf raises. Sit up straight and place your feet shoulder-width apart and flat on the floor under your desk. Press up on the balls of your feet to squeeze your calf muscles for a count of two. Repeat the movement 20 times to give your calves a quick workout.

Modified chair dips are an exercise that you can do at your desk when you are alone and not dealing with customers or co-workers. Sit down and place your hands on the arms of the chair. Press up until your arms are fully extended, then slowly lower yourself back down to the seated position. Repeat the movement 10 times to work your triceps and shoulder muscles.

Walk Instead of Driving

Walking will improve your fitness level and save you some gas money in the process. Try to walk whenever possible, and vary your pace. For example, walk to a friend’s house instead of taking your car. Depending on the reason for your visit, you may even want to jog part of the time.

Another way to get in a walking workout is by walking the dog. Instead of just letting the dog out in the yard, put it on a leash and go for a nice walk. Your dog will love the extra attention, and you can get in some exercise.

If you and a few of your co-workers go out to lunch several times a week, ask them if they would like to walk to the restaurant. This may not be possible depending on how far away the restaurant is from your job, however you may be able to get in a workout if you can find a place to eat that is nearby.
