Excessive Foot Sweating while Working Out: How to Alleviate the Problem

Excessive foot sweating is also known as hyperhydrosis and may affect both men and women, due to hyperactive sweat glands. During a workout, foot sweating is normal, as it is the body’s way to eliminate toxins. However, when the sweating is in excess, this may be a disturbing aspect. If you are bothered by the way your feet are sweating, there are a few ways to alleviate the problem.

Carefully Choose Your Socks

When you choose your socks, you should make sure they are 100% (or close to 100%) cotton, as cotton absorbs sweat and won’t intensify sweating, as other materials do (i.e. acrylic). You should also change your socks more often (i.e. before and after workout), as this will also prevent the occurrence of fungal and bacterial infections. It may help if the interior of the shoes are made of leather or cotton. Don’t perform your workout without socks.

Use Foot Antiperspirant

Using a foot antiperspirant can alleviate foot sweating. Choose an over the counter antiperspirant or talk to a dermatologists and get a prescription foot antiperspirant. Apply the antiperspirant after cleaning and drying your feet.

Use Baby Powder

Baby powder may also be applied on feet to prevent excessive sweating. Wash your feet and dry them, applying the powder afterwards.

Wash Frequently

You should wash your feet several times per day and make sure to dry them before you get socks. There are also more invasive treatments for hyperhydrosis, such as surgery or BOTOX® injections. Consult your dermatologist to decide if these procedures are recommended in your case.
