Canoeing and Kayaking: Have Fun While Exercising on the Water

The terms canoeing and kayaking are often used interchangeably. The main difference between these two is the boat and the paddle used. In canoeing, the boat could have an outboard motor attached to it. The boat is also usually open but some can also be covered. Aside from recreational boat trips, the canoe is also used by fishermen. The kayak is a relatively newer type of boat. Its cockpit and deck are usually covered so the paddlers will stay dry. The paddles used for kayaking are usually double-bladed while the ones used in canoeing usually have a single blade only. Both canoeing and kayaking are great outdoor sports. Here are some guidelines on how you can have fun while working out at the same time.

Know What to Bring

If this is your first time going on a paddling trip (whether it's canoeing or kayaking) then it's important to know what you need to bring. Even the most enjoyable trip can be ruined once you discover that you forgot to bring a spare paddle or that you don't have a container for your wet clothing. Canoe gear usually includes dry bags, knee pads, seat pads, duct tape, bailer, sponge, a rescue throw bag, an emergency whistle, a spare paddle and life jackets. Aside from your canoe gear, you also need to bring the right type of clothing. Waterproof boots, water shoes, waterproof cap and a windbreaker are some of the items that you will need. If you plan to go on an overnight paddling trip then you will have even more things to bring. Shelter items and cooking gear should also be on your checklist. Communication and safety gadgets are also important items to bring when you're going out into the wilderness.

Plan Your Trip Well

If you want to make your canoeing or kayaking experience as fun as possible then you will also need to plan it well. One of the things you need to consider is the weather. Pick a day where the forecast is for good and sunny weather. And no matter how good the weather is, be sure that you are still prepared in case the conditions change. The best time to schedule your paddling trip is during the middle of the spring until summer. You will also have a better chance of having a fun experience if you plan your trip well in advance.

Safety First

When it comes to adventurous sports like canoeing and kayaking, it's always important to practice safety. If you've never had any paddling experience before, listen to the experts and do not attempt to go paddling alone. Alcohol is another factor that can certainly threaten your safety. Most of the accidents that occur during canoeing and kayaking trips involve intoxication. Needless to say, drinking alcohol while or before paddling is a sure way to run into an accident. Canoeing and kayaking are activities that require your concentration so you need to be in the best state of mind.
