Everything You Need to Know About Sex and Ayurveda

Ayurveda is an ancient Indian philosophy that guides all aspects of health and well-being, including sex. Although many traditions have a similar view that sex is meant solely for procreation, Ayurveda isn’t quite so constrained. There are a lot of rules and guidelines, you can practice the act and follow along with the rituals with the understanding that they may not all work in the modern world.

According to Ayurveda, the body is made up of seven tissues or dhatus. Among them is one responsible for sexual fluids.

There are also factors that affect sexual energy, including a force known as apana vayu. This force is responsible for menstruation, reproduction and even orgasm. A healthy apana vayu relates to feelings of rootedness.

In the modern world, many studies and practices indicate that orgasm is more than just a release. It is also generally thought to promote good things in all aspect of health, from relaxation to sleep to reducing stress, etc. But according to Ayurveda, not all orgasms are good. In some cases, an orgasm can deplete the body, limiting energy and other essences important in Ayurveda and actually blocking the feelings of rootedness previously mentioned.

Ayurveda also has precise instructions on when and how to have sex. Although Western culture makes sex a dark, nighttime activity, Ayurveda sees things differently. The best time to have sex is in the morning after sunrise but before 10 o’clock. Another good time is in the early evening. And because things are already hot enough during the summer, your best bet is to have sex in the winter, when things are cooler and you have more energy for sexual activity. You can have sex anywhere from three to five times a week in the fall and winter, but slow things down to once every week or two. This way, your body won’t get backed up.

Recommended Ayurveda aphrodisiacs include coconut juice, milk, and ghee. And be sure to bathe regularly, especially after sex.
