What is a Vibration Plate?

Feb 12, 2010

The latest fitness device being used by athletes and celebrities alike is the vibration plate. For those interested in losing weight and building muscle, the plate provides vibration therapy, which can offer the same benefits as an hour in the gym undergoing traditional training. Originally used by Russian scientists as an experiment to stop the reduction of bone density and muscle atrophy in cosmonauts, they discovered that not only could they stop the loss, but generate an increase.

How a Vibration Plate Works

Using a vibration plate is fairly simple. While properly positioned, you stand on the plate as it moves. The entire body vibrates due to the high frequency of the platform, which causes the muscles to contract and stretch in order to sustain balance. These natural reflexes are involuntary and happen very rapidly, much like the knee jerk reaction tested by doctors. Even the most basic exercises will be intensified. Depending on your level of fitness, the duration and frequency of use will vary. Sessions should be repeated at a maximum of 3 times per week, at no more than 15 minutes per session. The user’s manual should be consulted on individual machines for more precise instructions.

Benefits of a Vibration Plate

A vibration plate can be used by anyone regardless of their physical condition. When set to the right frequency, the majority of the muscles can be tightened at once through subconscious stretch reflexes. Conventional muscle training only accesses about 45 percent of the muscles at any one time. Because of the load that's put upon your body with such rapid action during vibration therapy, your goals can be attained much faster.

Above and beyond the fitness advantages, the vibrations can assist in the production of hormones that repair and revitalize cells. Blood circulation is enhanced in the muscles, and bone tissue is reinforced. Use of vibration therapy can also promote the drainage of lymph nodes and increase overall metabolic rate. A general increase in strength, speed, flexibility and stamina can be achieved along with better post workout recovery. The quality and efficiency of a workout can be heightened with less time invested.

What Makes the Vibration Plate Unique

While the fitness benefits of a vibration plate are plentiful, there are numerous other advantages to it that push it to the forefront. Everyone can enjoy the fact that you don't break a sweat during the therapy, but women especially love this aspect. The skin can be tightened and toned while flexibility and balance are improved. Many people use vibration plates to decrease pain in the joints and muscles, as well as lower blood pressure. Better moods and higher energy levels can be achieved by an increase in serotonin levels. Physical and mental well being is acquired through developing better oxygen distribution among cells, improving the intake of cellular nutrients and assisting in the removal of cellular waste. The natural healing response of the body is stimulated when the functionality of the cells is restored.

As with any exercise routine, check with your doctor or health care professional before starting a new fitness program.
