4 Ways the Bikram Yoga Mat Facilitates Exercising

Bikram Yoga, otherwise known as "hot yoga," is performed in a heated room, preferably with a Bikram Yoga mat. When partaking in any exercise it is important to have the right equipment in order to reap all the benefits of it. There are many benefits to using a special Bikram yoga mat while performing this type of yoga.

1. Added Grip

The heat used in Bikram yoga increases sweating and therefore facilitates the release of toxins from the body. The heat in the room warms up the yoga practitioner's muscles and ligaments, making it easier for them to stretch and therefore decreasing the risk of injury. Many of the poses performed in Bikram yoga are challenging, and the heat allows the yoga practitioner's body to be more flexible and allowing them to achieve these poses. The heat also increases weight loss during the yoga session. Bikram yoga increases sweating and ordinary yoga mats can become slippery. Bikram toga mats are specially designed to provide extra friction so that they do not become slippery when you sweat. Using one decreases the chance of falling while trying to perform poses. Bikram yoga mats are especially beneficial to beginners who have not built up their yoga skills yet, as with the mat they can focus their attention on achieving the poses rather than trying not to slip.

2. Achieving Challenging Poses

A slippery mat will greatly hinder your yoga session and make it more difficult to achieve challenging poses. The added friction helps you grip with your palms, fingers and feet. The additional grip that a Bikram yoga mat provides means that you can achieve the balance and skill necessary to achieve challenging poses. Trying to negotiate a slippery mat detracts from your concentration during yoga, and therefore has a negative effect on your exercise session. It is more difficult to obtain tranquility and peace of mind when you are continuously having to adjust a problematic mat.

3. The Right Size

A Bikram Yoga mat is bigger than normal mats, to provide extra space for performing poses. The bigger size is more convenient for tall people. The mat is thick enough to provide cushioning from the floor, making your yoga session more comfortable as well as providing protection for your hips, knees and back. However, it is not too thick, as many of the poses require balance. A thicker mat would make this difficult.

4. Easy to Transport

Bikram yoga mats are light and can be conveniently fitted into their bags. This ensures that they can be easily transported to and from your yoga session. The easy transportation of the mat means that you can practice Bikram yoga in any area that is convenient for you.

Bikram yoga mats are available in an assortment of colours. Many are produced from natural materials and are environmentally friendly. Some mats come with removable covers that can be washed.
