How Does Running Form Affect Race Performance?

Is it more important to simply run or does it really matter how you run? Exactly how does running form affect race performance? Running is a very beneficial sport and can help a person achieve weight loss significantly fast. Some runner's adopt the running lifestyle for its cardiovascular benefits. Some do it in preparation for long-distance race running, while others simply love the way it makes them feel afterwards. 

When some runner's first begin with the sport, their focus may be on simply getting through the run time without feeling fatigued or getting hurt. They may not focus so much on their breathing or their running form. While it is important to be mindful of fatigue or injury, practicing a poor running form can hinder a new runner's progress and motivation. They may want to give up before they get a good start if they begin suffering from poor running form.

While runners will unanimously agree that running is a good thing, what you will often see are those that run completely different from each other in style and in form. Especially where races are concerned, it is critically important to have good running form in order to see a good racing time result. Differences in form can affect the runner's ultimate goal and can also often hinder her progress towards seeing results. 

Look Up

Poor racing form can horribly affect racing performance in many ways. If people run with their head facing downwards, they are essentially dragging their bodies along and slowing down their race time. They should run with their heads lifted high, parallel to the road directly in front of them. This form will increase their speed and timing and even help to be able to see over any upcoming hills 

Also, looking up helps to avoid injuries or falls. When the head is elevated, it also pulls up the shoulders and straightens the back as the runner is moving along. Facing forward can improve a runner's performance significantly.

Arms Together

Runners arms should be close to their sides and not swing out too wide while running. As each foot takes off on the run, the elbows should brush against the side of the runner's body with the hands in an open palm position, facing inward. This position helps to move the runner along swiftly as the arms movement's are further propelled by the "pushing off" motion that it creates.

For every runner, form will be slightly different depending on their height, size and ability. While the form on each runner may not look the same visually, following the two steps above should enable each runner to benefit and achieve the same results. Although a runner's form can be manipulated in any way, the most important things to remember are to 1.) practice good and 2.) set a comfortable running pace.

Each of these will allow a runner to find their running rhythm and get the most beneficial results from their efforts. It will be much better for future runs and physical well-being to adopt and pursue healthy practices from the beginning.
